7 Steps Of Importing With IKIGAI MOTORS

1. Consultation & Vehicle Sourcing

Your journey begins with a thorough, no-obligation consultation where we discuss your exact requirements, budget, and desired vehicle. We tap into our extensive network, including reputable Japanese auction houses, private sellers, and UK dealers, to source the perfect car. Our team performs meticulous pre-purchase inspections to ensure the vehicle's condition aligns with your expectations before any commitment is made.

2. Import Approval (ROVER Application)

Before your chosen vehicle can even leave its country of origin, a Vehicle Import Approval (VIA) from the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications (DITRDCA) is mandatory via their ROVER system. We expertly guide you through the online application, ensuring all documentation is correct and submitted efficiently. This step is critical and ensures your chosen car is eligible for Australian import under the Road Vehicle Standards (RVS) Act.

3. Pre-Shipment Preparation & Asbestos Testing

Once your VIA is approved, we arrange comprehensive pre-shipment preparations. This is vital for smooth Australian entry. Vehicles undergo thorough steam cleaning to remove any biosecurity risks (dirt, seeds, pests). Critically, for all imports, we facilitate mandatory asbestos testing of specific components. This is a strict Australian requirement, and non-compliance can lead to severe penalties or even vehicle destruction. We also ensure any air-conditioning gas is safely removed if necessary.

4. International Shipping & Logistics

We coordinate secure and efficient international transport for your vehicle. Depending on the origin and vehicle type, we arrange either Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) shipping or containerised transport. Our logistics partners handle all port procedures, and we keep you fully informed with tracking updates as your car makes its journey across the seas to Australia.

5. Customs Clearance & Biosecurity Quarantine

Upon your vehicle's arrival, it undergoes rigorous inspection by the Australian Border Force (ABF) for customs clearance and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) for biosecurity quarantine. We meticulously manage all import declarations, calculate and handle payment for customs duty, Goods & Services Tax (GST), and Luxury Car Tax (LCT) if applicable, ensuring a smooth and compliant entry into Australia. Any detected biosecurity risks are immediately addressed.

6. RAW Workshop Compliance & VASS Certification: Our Speciality!

This is where IKIGAI MOTORS truly excels and your investment is protected. As a fully accredited Registered Automotive Workshop (RAW), we are authorised to perform all necessary modifications to bring your vehicle into full compliance with stringent Australian Design Rules (ADRs). Our highly skilled technicians use state-of-the-art equipment to perform common modifications like child restraint anchor points, lighting conversions, speedometer recalibration, and emissions adjustments as per the approved Model Report Work Instructions. Following compliance, we secure its essential VASS (Vehicle Assessment Signatory Scheme) Certificate, an engineering certification unique to Victoria, verifying all modifications and ensuring your vehicle is safe and roadworthy.

7. State Registration

The final, exciting step! Once federal approval (entry to the Register of Approved Vehicles - RAV) and state-specific compliance (like the VASS certificate in Victoria) are complete, we'll guide you through the process of registering your newly imported vehicle with VicRoads or your state department. This includes providing proof of ownership, identity, and the necessary compliance documentation to get your car road legal and ready for your adventures on Australian roads.
